Đờn Ca Tài Tử is a genre of Vietnamese traditional music which is officially recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2013. It was formed and developed from the late 19th century, originated from Nhã Nhạc. Đờn Ca Tài Tử is an indispensable part of the spiritual activity and cultural heritage of the local people in the Southern of Vietnam, especially in Mekong Delta.
Đờn Ca Tài Tử, an art form of playing Vietnamese traditional instruments and singing, is usually performed by the local people, both men and women in the Southern countryside after working hours in festivals, death anniversary rituals, on social events, after harvesting seasons or even under the moonlit nights in the village. It reflects their inner feelings and emotions, industriousness, generosity and courage by improvising, ornamenting and varying the standard melodies and the main rhythmic patterns. One of the most famous and influential musicians of Đờn Ca Tài Tử is Cao Văn Lầu (1892–1976). He is also widely known as the original composer of Vọng Cổ, which started a new genre of music - Cải Lương, formed on the basis of Đờn Ca Tài Tử, in the 1920s. It has been passed from generation to generation as a good tradition, a string to tie families together.
Đờn Ca Tài Tử is currently being developed in 21 provinces and cities in the Southern region of Vietnam. Those who attend this art of music are mostly friends or neighbors. They gather to share elegant pleasures to each other, so they often do not bother about costumes, except performing at temples or on stages. The instruments for performance include the moon-shaped lute (Đàn Nguyệt), Vietnamese 2-stringed fiddle (Đàn Cò), Vietnamese 16-stringed Zither (Đàn Tranh), pear-shaped 4-stringed fretted lute (Đàn Tỳ Bà), percussion, monochord (Đàn Bầu), and bamboo flute (Sáo). In recent years, the Đờn Ca Tài Tử groups have merged into semi-professional clubs in order to meet the needs of tourists and provide entertainment upon request. Nowadays, Đờn Ca Tài Tử makes a substantial contribution to tourism in the South of Vietnam.
